"Laughter is beautiful and a smile is a girls best accessory... Always."

Growing up I would often ask my mom, “How do I look?” “How does this look?” “Do I look okay in this?” Most days involved a lot of changes before I felt like I could leave the house and at the end of every day, I’d record my outfit in my Wardrobe Book. Yep. It’s true. I had a notebook that I kept a daily account of every outfit I wore and how I accessorized it to ensure two things: 1- that I never wore the same outfit twice within a month’s span and 2- that in those dreadful moments of having clean laundry, but “nothing to wear” I could refer back to a plethora of fashion choices. You know, as long as I hadn’t already worn it too recently…
I kept up with this wardrobe notebook for well over a year before I tired of my own self-imposed rules. But the real truth was that I had put on some weight and wearing something “cute” now seemed too difficult. All I wanted to do was blend into the background.
Throughout all that time, and both extremes, my mom’s advice stayed the same. “Any outfit looks great as long as you’re smiling.”
I have taken her wise words with me and think of them anytime I find myself in that all too familiar rut of “having nothing to wear” or “not looking good enough” or now, as a mom, feeling apprehensive in my changed body. With a daughter of my own, I want to be sure that I lead by example. I don’t want her to see me obsessing in front of a mirror. I don’t want her to grow up thinking that she’s supposed to be insecure. I’ve adapted my moms words to serve not only as a reminder to myself, but also to teach my daughter that no matter the outfit, it pales in comparison to laughter and a smile. Because joy is always beautiful.
